INTRODUCTION
Think about fragmentary records from burned counties, references to forgotten patents, testamentary proceedings such as inventories and accounts much darkened with age, voices speaking out from long dead depositions, long-standing social connections, a marital separation and a love story, and imperfect indexes. What do these records have in common? Along with an unusually detailed will, the combination of these seldom-searched records are essential threads which helped reweave and make much more vivid the correct saga concerning the first four generations of Bouldins.
This research also provides a valuable lesson for less experienced researchers about never giving up on burned counties or overlooking any source, no matter how initially insignificant they might appear. Moreover, proof sometimes can occur years after an event.
Special thanks go to the terrific staff at the Library of Virginia and the Maryland State Archives. All the Virginia records are located at the Library of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia, while the Maryland records are located at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis, Maryland.
'The Bouldin Saga' in the December 2007
issue of the "Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin" by
Katharine Harbury provides previously unavailable and unknown
evidence which corrects and adds to the first four generations
of the Bouldin lineage. It outlines the difficulties of
probable but unproven link to Thomas Bouldin the Immigrant of 1610
and William Bouldin I. This paper also spells an end
to many incorrect myths found in various older publications, and can
be obtained from the Maryland Genealogical Society for a small fee by
emailing asybert1@bcpl.net.
Due to lack of a "paper
trail" which is mandated by genealogical societies today,
no descendant can yet claim Thomas Bouldin the Immigrant as
their ancestor. While the article does eliminate all other
known possible contenders as the father of our earliest proven
ancestor, William Bouldin I of Gloucester County, Virginia and
Baltimore County, Maryland, we cannot prove that William Bouldin I
was the son of Thomas Bouldin the Immigrant. While this
paternity remains quite likely, DNA testing will be required to prove
-or disprove -William Bouldin I's connection to Thomas Bouldin the
Immigrant once and for all.
William Bouldin I's legal
wife was Rachel, who may or may not have been nee' Lewis.
Perhaps due to their childless marriage, he made provisions for
his wife's future welfare and then left for what is now Cecil
County, Maryland with his two sons by his next love, Mary Thwaite.
She had been unusually well educated back in England and could
write in a very neat and tiny script. After
acknowledgement of his two sons by Mary, he made provisions for
them and made Mary their guardian. No other family members or
executors were mentioned. Recognizing Mary's extraordinary
qualities, the court officials for once did not strictly follow the
law and granted her rights as if she was William’s legal
second wife. She would later remarry three times
during the next ten years and bear a number of children.
None survived except for one son, William Bouldin II, and
probably one daughter who was probably a half-sister instead of
step-sister to William II.
William Bouldin II married Thomasin
Nash and raised a number of children, some of whom stayed in Cecil
County, Maryland for decades while others eventually moved away to
other locations, such as Delaware, Virginia and South Carolina. A lot
of confused relationships concerning the children of this fourth
generation are also presented and cleared up. After Thomasin's
death, William Bouldin II and his son Alexander Bouldin moved to
parts yet unknown after April 1734, but the location was within
traveling distance of New Castle, Delaware. Many Bouldin
descendants distinguished themselves during the Revolutionary War and
were appointed to high offices.
i
CORRECTED BOULDIN GENEALOGY: THE FIRST FOUR GENERATIONS
The Bouldin saga in America likely begins with Thomas Bouldin I, yeoman, who decided to come aboard the Swan early in 1610 as part of Lord De La Warr’s entourage and leave England forever, but absolute proof is still lacking. Thomas was among those willing to risk his life to settle in Virginia under the auspices of The Virginia Company of London. However dangerous the risk, the options to purchase one share of stock at the price of £12 and 10s, and to own a hundred acres for each share after a number of years must have appeared attractive. If one paid his passage to Virginia, he would be exempt from military service and taxes other than Church duties. If the Virginia Company of London paid his passage, he was required to pay annual fees on top of his service and do his share of military duties and taxes. On 8 June 1610, Thomas Bouldin I and other hopefuls were sailing up the James River aboard the Swan when their ship met another ship bound for England with the last of the survivors from Jamestown. This providential encounter helped prevent the abandonment of the Jamestown colony.i The rest is history.
Due to extensive loss of the earliest records, it is not known where Thomas Bouldin I first lived during this particular time. It is believed that shortly after his arrival, Thomas Bouldin I was sent immediately with other colonists to Kecoughtan, a recently destroyed Indian village. As the next settlement after Jamestown in 1610, Kecoughtan was located on the east side of Hampton Creek, across from what is now Hampton on the west side.ii This area, located at the mouth of the James River at Hampton Roads, was considered a healthier spot.iii It was one of the four locations that made up the “1st Divident” for The Virginia Company of London.iv Although Kecoughtan was later changed officially into The Corporation of Elizabeth City in 1624, Kecoughtan was still used as a place name by inhabitants in the 18th-century.v
In 1616, Kecoughtan was a little more than a frontier outpost, made defensible with three mounted pieces of ordnance sometime before 1623.vi The commander of the fortified settlement was Captain William Tucker, vii who oversaw an unspecified number of women and children along with twenty men and boys.viii Minister William Mease tended to his flock from 1610 to 1619ix while ministers George Keith, Thomas White and Jonas Stodgen or Stockton served between 1620 and 1624.x After the 1622 Indian uprising, survivors from surrounding plantations came to this outpost, now called Elizabeth City, for safety, and swelled the numbers from 349 souls in 1624 to 360 a year later.xi When the famous muster rolls concerning “the living and the dead” were written during 23 January 1624/5, Thomas Bouldin I was among the inhabitants at Elizabeth City. Now aged 40, Thomas Bouldin I stated that he had arrived on the Swan back in 1610, and had a son William (I?), born in Virginia. In his household, there were three “pieces” (probably pieces of ordnance), one suit
1
of armor, one coat of mail, three swords, and powder.xii It is believed that the three men
listed under Thomas Bouldin I’s name were required to do their share of military duties and pay taxes.
The enumerator of the 1624/5 muster roll did not cite the age for Thomas Bouldin I’s son William (I?). He could not have been born earlier than 1612, if Thomas Bouldin I found a bride as soon as 1611 and had a child born in 1612. Given our knowledge of the settlers’ hardships and the scarcity of women in Virginia during the earliest years of the colony, it is more likely that Thomas Bouldin I married after 1616 and before January 1624. Circumstantial evidence supports this hypothesis.
Mary Bouldin, an “ancient planter, “was described as the wife of Thomas Bouldin I on 12 January 1624 when she patented her 100 acres adjacent to her husband’s parcel. The land was along Deep Creek by Southampton River within the corporation of Elizabeth City, and was in an area known as Strawberry Banke. She was to “people and plant the same.”xiii Her designation as an ancient planter revealed that she had paid for her passage, came to Virginia and lived here for at least three years prior to the 1616 departure of Sir Thomas Dale for England.xiv We do not know if she came to Virginia as some settler’s potential bride, wife, widow, or indentured servant. While her maiden name has been lost in the mists of time, she may or may not be related in some way to Richard Birchett, another ancient planter who deeded 100 acres to Thomas Bouldin I on 19 January 1619. This is the only record naming Richard Birchett, who disappeared before the 1624/5 muster rolls. If Birchett was a married man, perhaps Mary was his widow. Otherwise, Mary probably was one of the twelve unnamed women living at “Kecoughtanare” around 1619, or was one of the survivors who came to Kecoughtan from one of the surrounding plantations. xv
While we cannot prove that Mary was the mother of William Bouldin (I?) through documentation, circumstantial evidence supports this theory because of an unusually tight time frame. Granted, Thomas Bouldin could have been a widower trying to raise his son when he married Mary. However, in view of Mary’s appearance on 12 January 1624 and the appearance of William Bouldin (I?) on the 23 January 1624/5 muster list along with Mary’s disappearance from the latter record, it is believed that Mary gave birth to William Bouldin (I?) sometime in 1624 and died from childbirth-related complications. Contrary to what some sources have speculated, the enumerator did not overlook Mary Bouldin when he made the lists. It also explains why her name does not reappear in any of the subsequent records. In view of these few facts, Mary was probably the mother of William Bouldin (I?), but documentary proof is still lacking. Had Mary Bouldin lived longer, we would have learned her perhaps her name, and certainly age, year of arrival, and the name of her ship from the same 1624/5 muster roll.
Thomas Bouldin I obtained his patent on 20 January 1624 as a yeoman and ancient
2
planter.” Besides the 100 acres from Richard Birchett, he received his own 100 acres next to his wife Mary’s tract.xvi Like wife Mary, this patent meant that Thomas Bouldin I had paid for his passage and had arrived in Virginia at least three years before Dale’s departure in 1616. He was therefore exempt from paying taxes. Luckily, a representative for the Virginia Company of London made careful notes of patentees in various settlements and sent the information back to the Lords of his Majesty’s Privy Council in England via Sir Francis Wyatt. Thomas Bouldin I, wife Mary and Mr. Keyth were among those named for Elizabeth City. The Lords of the Privy Council acknowledged this important list in their letter from Salisbury, England during May 1625.xvii Mr. Keith or Keyth might have been the minister who married Thomas and Mary Bouldin.
Once the worst of the 1622 uprising-related dangers passed, Thomas Bouldin I and other settlers continued to move and settle in nearby areas outside of Kecoughtan, including Newport News, Warwick River (now Warwick County) and Elizabeth City. In spite of high mortality rates, the population continued to grow in the fledgling Virginia colony. Depending on the exact location of the boundaries at the time, Thomas Bouldin I and his son William were probably two of the 811 persons living either in the county of “Warricke river” or of the 859 individuals living within the county of “Elizabeth Citty.”xviii
According to his patent of 30 November 1628, Thomas Sully, planter, owned 94 acres towards the head of Southampton River, near Thomas Bolden.xix Adam Thoroughgood patented land on 12 March 1634 near Thomas Bolding, John Robinson, and William Capps,xx and again on 21 March 1634, near the same three neighbors.xxi On 20 September 1637, Adam was an owner of land that once belonged to John Gundrye, not far from the Hampton River. Thomas Bouldin I was his neighbor.xxii Neighbor Thomas Sewell or Seawell of nearby Warwick County also lived near Thomas Bouldin on 20 April 1635.xxiii Thomas Bouldin I’s other neighbor was John Moore of adjacent Warwick County, who lived on the east side of his lands on 3 July 1635.xxiv Thomas Bouldin I and this John Moore were again named in another patent as neighbors of Thomas Viscount, 13 July 1635.xxv The name “John Moore” would turn out to be especially significant, since the name would reappear in later records elsewhere in connection with the Bouldin family. In Capt. Christopher Wormely’s fragmentary patent dated 7 April 1638, Thomas Bolden was mentioned along with other nearby inhabitants.xxvi
Thomas Bouldin I held two more patents. On 27 September 1638, as Thomas Boulding, he was once the owner of 200 acres in Elizabeth City County, which butted on Ben Syms Creeke, John Moore and Thomas Sewell, and now in the possession of Henry Batt.xxvii On the last day of October 1639, again as Thomas Boulding, he gained 400 acres for transporting seven persons and an assignment from William Baulk.xxviii A Toby Smith renewed patents on 10 January 1643, and 10 and 16 September 1644, where Thomas Bouldin I was mentioned as a neighbor.xxix Considering frontier hardships and dangers,
3
famine, diseases, the 1622 uprising, and a recent similar attack that very spring in 1644, Thomas Bouldin I managed to reach respectable middle age and gain economic status through his efforts and land investments.
Some people have claimed that Thomas Bouldin I had other children. According to The Powell Families of Virginia and the South by Rev. Fr. Silas Emmett Lucas Jr , a Richard Bouling or Boulin of Lower Norfolk made a will on 14 July 1668, naming William Ellis as his “brother.” Lucas believed that the name might be Boulding and that Richard might be a younger son of Thomas Bouldin I. He also added that Elizabeth, wife of William Ellis, was a sister of Richard and thus a possible daughter of Thomas Bouldin I. While it is clear
that Richard Bouling’s wife Elizabeth named in his will was not his first wife, she or his prior wife could have been a sister of William Ellis. Richard Bouling signed his name clearly as Boulin in his will, which showed that he was literate. The largely intact 17th-century Norfolk County records do not show any familial relationship between Elizabeth and Richard Boulin under any spelling to Thomas Bouldin I or his son William Bouldin (I?), who could only sign with an initial “W.” Nor do these two Bouldins appear in the Norfolk County records under any spelling. Moreover, Lower Norfolk County was located further south of the Corporation of Elizabeth City while Elizabeth City and Gloucester County was located further north. No documented proof for possible siblings or half-siblings in either Kecoughtan, Elizabeth City, Newport News, or Warwick, Gloucester and Norfolk counties has come to light. To date, there is no conclusive proof of any connection between Thomas Bouldin I, his son William (I?) and these Boulin(g)s of Lower Norfolk County.xxx
Thomas Bouldin I died probably not long after 16 September 1644, presumably within the Corporation of Elizabeth City since his name was not mentioned in any subsequent record for this part of Virginia or in other counties.
Thomas Bouldin I married Mary _____ before 12 January 1624, and presumably by her, had one child:
+William Bouldin (I?), born c. 1624, Kecoughtan, Corporation of Elizabeth City, Virginia.
It is hoped that more efforts will be made in the future regarding DNA testing to prove or disprove the connection between Thomas Bouldin I of Kecoughtan/Elizabeth City County and William Bouldin I of Gloucester County, Virginia. Once a match can be found between a Bouldin family in England and our line, research should be focused on a Thomas Bouldin somewhere in that particular Bouldin family in England who, by tradition or documentation, was said to have left for Virginia.
4
William Bouldin I, born ca. 1624–1630, Virginia, married Rachel (Lewis?) and later separated. His next love was Mary Thwaite who moved to Maryland with him before he died on or shortly after 26 August 1671, Baltimore County, Maryland. His birthdate is based on the following events of his life, his contemporaries, and date of death.
From available evidence and circumstances mentioned earlier, it is very likely that William Bouldin I of Gloucester County was indeed the infant William, born ca. 1624 at Kecoughtan as the son of Thomas Bouldin I, but since there is yet still no documented genealogical proof, William Bouldin I of Gloucester County is designated as our earliest proven ancestor to date by way of documentation.
It is believed that William Bouldin I moved around the peninsula of Elizabeth City County to Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, in search of fresh soil for tobacco cultivation. He married Rachel, whose maiden name may have been Lewis. This marriage appeared to be devoid of surviving children, if any. Aged about thirty-six in 1660 if he was indeed the infant William born ca. 1624, William Bouldin I clearly wanted children but this spelled legal difficulties for his marriage. Divorces were considered nearly unthinkable in the eyes of the established English church, never mind frowned upon as part of the English tradition.
Spouses could resort to local judges for divorce a mensa et thoro, i.e., a separation from bed and board. A couple could live apart but could not remarry as long as the other legal spouse lived. A divorce more familiar to us today was known as a vinculo matrimonii, a total dissolution of a marriage between spouses. While occasionally granted, such divorces required proof of adultery, not just consent or any default in the eyes of the law. Many men instead resorted to desertion of their wives and abandonment of their properties. Often no legal action was taken against them, and wives were left in awkward positions as femmes coverts without husbands. If the husband was not heard from after seven years, he was considered legally dead in the eyes of the court. His wife could then achieve the status of a widow, sell land, and remarry if she desired.xxxi
William Bouldin I had fallen in love with Mary Thwaite who had come to Gloucester County, Virginia sometime before July 1662 as a head right of Lawrence Smith.xxxii Given the destruction of Gloucester County records, we will never know how William Bouldin I dealt with his marital dilemma. It is believed he had obtained a divorce a mensa et thoro because later records prove that he never had the chance to marry Mary Thwaite. Moreover, he clearly did not wish to cause his wife Rachel any further hardship under the circumstances. Instead of desertion, he preferred to ensure her future welfare before starting life anew elsewhere. In a deed dated 14 March 1670, William Bouldin I gave 300 acres to his then wife Rachel, Morgan Lewis, and his heirs. The term, then wife, normally refers to a
5
prior wife alive at the time of a document.xxxiii While it is technically correct that Rachel was William Bouldin I’s first wife, records in Maryland revealed another meaning with a different twist. Morgan Lewis later made a will on 6 January 1675 and bequeathed the land to Rachel. By 1680, ten years had passed, and presumably, Rachel had not heard from William Bouldin I. Now free to dispose of her lands as she saw fit, Rachel sold a portion of her lands in 1680 to Benjamin Clements for life and then to his daughter Ann.xxxiv In 1681, Thomas Morrell purchased her other portion.xxxv Scanty early Gloucester County records do not reveal Rachel’s subsequent fate after these transactions.
William Bouldin I was not the William “Bowlin” who received 887 acres in the same parish in Gloucester County according to a patent dated 14 April 1668, because that
William Bowlin was deceased in Gloucester County by 24 April 1704.xxxvi We do know from records in Maryland, however, that William Bouldin I did own other acreage in Gloucester County, but the size and location of this particular parcel has not been identified.xxxvii
William Bouldin I left Virginia and sailed up the Chesapeake Bay to Baltimore County, Maryland after 14 March 1670 and before 26 August 1671. He may have chosen Maryland because some former Gloucester County residents, such as the Brocas family, had settled there. While John Moore had moved from Warwick County to Gloucester County near William Bouldin I, he did not move to Maryland like the Brocas family.xxxviii William Bouldin I’s two young sons, William and Thomas by Mary Thwaite, accompanied their father. So did Mary Thwaite who was listed as Whaite.xxxix Although the names Thomas and William would be repeated for generations, this naming pattern still does not constitute documented genealogical proof that William Bouldin I was the William, son of Thomas Bouldin I. The naming pattern only increases the possibility that William Bouldin I was William Bouldin, born ca. 1624.
Towne Point is located at the fork of the Elk River/Back Creek on the north side and Bohemia River on the south side.xl After William Bouldin I settled at Towne Point, he made some arrangement, now lost, concerning a lease for this tract with either Thomas Gutterin or a Maryland official, George Gouldsmith. On 12 April 1665, a Thomas Gutterin “of Rappahannock” had patented 800 acres called “the Town point,” from which rent would be collected. George Gouldsmith wrote and signed the patent.xli Another lost record must have recorded 200 acres, which were added to the 800-acre parcel at Towne Point to make a total of 1000 acres as proven by a will. It was here that William Bouldin I and Mary Thwaite hoped to live here as a couple and raise their family.

On 30 September 1672, administration of William Bouldin I’s estate was granted to Mary Thwaite, administratrix. She was clearly viewed as William’s “second wife” for all
practical purposes, if not in the eyes of the church or the law. This is a clear indication that others recognized Mary Thwaite as an extraordinary woman. The court also ordered Thomas Howell of Somerset County to serve as her security for her due administration of
the estate and other court-related duties. Mary Thwaite and Augustine Herman signed their names while George Brocas signed his with a “B” mark. These two men served as her sureties.xliii Hugh ffouck and William Price were to appraise the estate and have the inventory returned to court in six months.xliv
William Bouldin I’s estate was inventoried and submitted to court on 13 November 1672. Besides the usual animals, furnishings, and refined items, the list included a sea bed (i.e.,
hammock), 2 fringed carpets, chests, 3 swords, 4 guns, 1 gun lock & belt, 2 servants, one gold ring, one silver tobacco box, and “the Lease of the plantacon being 1000 Acres &
7
thirteene yeares to come called Towne point.” The total was 25, 682 pounds of tobacco.xlv William Bouldin I was a man of respectable means.
The will of William Bouldin I made clear that his two children were the only surviving children, which may indicate that there was one more child back in Abingdon Parish who did not survive. Fortunately for researchers, three copies of a then extant register for Abingdon Parish was made in the late 19th-century before the register itself was lost by fire in 1916. The records do not begin until 1677, which is too late to list the marriage of William Bouldin I to Rachel, the births of his children, and other references to the early Brocas family members. A John Moore, however, was listed as the father of a daughter baptized in 1678/9.xlvi It is no accident that the name John Moore was mentioned earlier in Warwick County and now in Gloucester County. Clearly the social connection between neighbors Thomas Bouldin I and John Moore along the Warwick and Elizabeth City County lines was maintained between his possible son William Bouldin I and Moore’s namesake, another John Moore. The proof that John Moore or More was connected to the earlier John Moore of Warwick County, and was from that county as well, can be found in a cattle mark registry book. John Moore or More was described as a resident of Gloucester County and benefactor of John Sadler, child, in the County of “Denbigh” (i.e., Warwick County) in 1656.xlvii The fact that John Moore was from Warwick County area and had moved to Gloucester County is another clue that supports the hypothesis that William Bouldin I may well be the William Bouldin (I?), son of Thomas Bouldin I, and that William Bouldin later moved to Gloucester County like John Moore and members of the Brocas family. Even John Sadler, child, later moved to Gloucester County and lived near John Moore.xlviii
The will also revealed that William Bouldin I did not name any possible siblings, half-siblings, step-sibings, or other close family members, either in Virginia or Maryland, which is very telling. Normally a family member or friend would be named to assist Mary Thwaite, guardian of his two sons, or as an alternative guardian in case Mary died during their minority. The implication is that there were no close kin. This again fits the profile of William Bouldin, son of Thomas Bouldin I, who appears to be an only child.
Since son William Thwayte was named first, it is presumed that he was the eldest son. From his depositions later in life, he was aged about five to seven years of age at the time of
his father’s death, and thus was born circa 1664–1666.xlix His younger brother, Thomas Thwayte, perhaps aged three to five years of age, later died during his minority. The terms of the thirteen-year lease is significant, since it would end at the very time William Thwayte reached age seventeen. The will was also the last time William Thwayte was named as such, since he thereafter was known under his rightful surname, William Bouldin II.
8
William Bouldin I, born ca. 1624–30? Virginia, and Mary Thwaite had the following children:
+ William Thwayte/Bouldin II2 (William Bouldin I1) b. ca. 1664–1666, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, and married Thomasin Nash.
Thomas Thwayte/Bouldin [II2?] (William Bouldin I1), b. c. 1665–1667, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, and died by March 1679 during his minority,
perhaps at Town Point, Baltimore or Cecil County, Maryland. Since he was never
mentioned again, he probably died young and thus was not among the four unnamed children in March 1679. If he were among the four, his name would have been mentioned because of his rightful inherited portion from his father. This never occurred.
The following records reveal the great lengths and pains William Bouldin I, Mary Thwaite and three stepfathers took to ensure that William Bouldin II and his brother Thomas were known as sons of William Bouldin I, and that William II’s legacy was protected until he came of age.
Barred by marriage and divorce laws to marry William Bouldin I during his lifetime, Mary Thwaite married three times between November 1672 and October 1682, namely Captain William Brockhurst, William Brokas, and Edward Jones, chirurgeon. William Brokas, a relation to “George Broccas, “ had served as a witness surnamed Brokes to William Bouldin I’s will in 1671.l At one point, Mary Thwaite-(Bouldin)-Brockhurst signed her new name in a tiny and neat script, “Mary Brockas,” among her administrative papers. li Since her beautiful penmanship was clearly distinct from the handwriting of the clerk who wrote the document, we have Mary’s actual signature. Another account supports this fact by stating that “Mary Brokas signed.” Somewhere back in England, Mary had received a very good education, which in turn is an indication that she came from an upper class background. Clearly, there is a story to be discovered about her own life back in England prior to her arrival in Virginia.
Brockhurst’s inventory incorporated a lot of William Bouldin I’s possessions along with his own, and referred to four children.lii The accounts for both Brockhurt and Brokas, along with the will of Edward Jones also revealed the presence of otherwise unknown half-siblings and a stepdaughter. Captain William Brockhurst and chirurgeon Edward Jones were literate men while William Brokas could only sign his name with a simple “W” mark.

With a wife named Elizabeth, Jones served as witness to a deed of William Bouldin II and wife Thomasin Nash in 1695.lxiv
William Bouldin II in a 1723 deposition stated that he had Told his mother about the path clearing and she told it to his father [sic] and the next Day he heard his afd father-in-law Edward Jones” say how clever Mr. Augustine Herman was because the path would gain him additional acreage.lxv His stepfather Edward Jones was called “father” out of respect but William II then makes it clear that Jones was actually his stepfather. (This term not only meant father-in-laws but also stepfathers in the 17th-century. Knowledge of Thomasin’s own family proves that stepfather is meant here.)
William Bouldin II’s mother, the much-married Mary Thwaite-(Bouldin)-Brockhurst-Brocas-Jones, appears to have died by August 1693. Although Edward Jones was described during a 13 October 1695 court session as the one who married the relict of Brokas, this does not necessarily mean that Mary was still living at the time. He was still responsible for the accounting of the various estates to the court’s satisfaction. He might be the Edward Jones with wife Dorothy since a will of Robert Crooke, dated 28 August 1693, mentioned an Edward Jones, his wife Dorothy, and his only daughter, Elizabeth.lxvi
When William Bouldin II and his wife Thomasin of Cecil County sold 200 acres called the Addition in Kent County to Samuel Osborn on 27 September 1695, his stepfather Edward Jones and his latest wife, Elizabeth, served as witnesses. The Addition had once belonged to Thomasin’s father, Richard Nash. Thomasin signed her name with an “O” mark, which she consistently used throughout her life.lxvii
The 4 March 1696/7 will and lengthy inventory of Edward Jones did not mention any of his stepchildren. Edward Jones’ inventory did mention a silver tobacco box, once belonging to William Bouldin I, and then William Brockhurst. Edward Jones named wife Elizabeth and
11
his only child, daughter Elizabeth Jones, who was to inherit all the lands, slaves and goods
after his wife’s death.lxviii The lands included a tract called Mesopotamia, which he patented on 10 August 1684, while other parcels were called Jones Green Spring, Salem, and others.lxix It is too bad that deeds by Edward Jones to his daughter Elizabeth have not survived either in Baltimore, Kent or Cecil Counties. It would have been helpful to know
Elizabeth Jones’ age in 1684 in order to establish whether his previous wife Mary was her mother. Since it was seventeen years between 1684 and her marriage to James Harris on 2 April 1701,lxx Elizabeth thus must have been an infant or a very small child in 1684. We can deduce, however, that Elizabeth was among the unnamed children mentioned in the 1694 accounts.
Aged 42 in 1724 and 48 in 1730, James Harris was born about 1682.lxxi He and Elizabeth were probably close in age. Elizabeth (Jones) Harris last appeared in the land records on 13 August 1714 in Kent County.lxxii Although no evidence of a prior wife for Edward Jones has been located, this does not necessarily mean that there was no previous wife. In view of the circumstantial evidence, however, Elizabeth Jones was more likely Edward Jones’ daughter by wife Mary Thwaite, but we do not yet have absolute proof.
It pays to scrutinize every available resource, even in burned counties like this example has shown for Virginia and Maryland. Every clue or inference counts. Besides the unusually detailed will of William Bouldin I, these inventories and accounts reveal their extraordinary role concerning William Bouldin II’s paternity, his legacy, and previously unknown half-siblings and step-sister. These family dynamics have entirely rewritten this particular generation. William Bouldin II grew up with a brother Thomas Bouldin II, two or three Brockhurst half-siblings; maybe one Brocas half-sibling, possible half-sibling Elizabeth Jones, and an older stepsister Susanna Brocas. In this complex household, the only living person William Bouldin II could rightfully claim as his full-blooded relative at age seventeen was his mother, Mary Thwaite.

+ William Thwayte/Bouldin II2 (William Bouldin I 1), b. ca. 1664–1666, Abingdon
Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia; married Thomasin Nash; and died after 17
April 1734, place unknown.
On 30 July 1694, William Bouldin II, planter, gave his widowed friend Ruth Wheeler of Kent County, slave Peter, other accouterments, and 3, 200 pounds of tobacco.lxxiii William Bouldin II signed the document in the form of a tidy monogram, WB. (The “W” was usually composed of two interlocking “V”s, a device that he would use throughout his life.) William Bouldin II also appeared as the greatest creditor and administrator of Samuel Wheeler’s estate since his widow Ruth refused administer his estate, possibly due to poor health.lxxiv His Bouldin name on the 25 May 1695 preprinted form was penned as “Bowlin.”lxxv In 10 February 1700, as William Boulden, he was one of the bondsmen for the estate of John Veazy.lxxvi He also served as a witness to an indenture made between Casparus Augustine Herman of Bohemia Manor and Richard ffranklin on 26 Dec. 1704, and another between Thomas Browning and James Harris on 12 April 1708.lxxvii The latter deed is significant since James Harris was the husband of Elizabeth Jones who is believed to be William’s possible younger half-sister.
It is through land records and depositions that we find more genealogical information and a glimpse of William Bouldin II’s personality. On 10 November 1702, William Bolding and wife Thomasin sold Thomas Browning 100 acres along Scots Mans Creek on the south side of Bohemia River. This was called Essex Lodge, which had been patented by William “Brouckus,” adjacent to the Glebe Farm and Saint Stephen’s Church.lxxviii How William Bouldin possessed this property was explained in another Browning deed dated 12 April 1708. His Lordship had granted Essex Lodge to William Brockas who left it to his daughter Susanna.lxxix Omealys or Omaleys Creek, near Bohemia River, was later known as Scots Mans or Scotsman’s Creek. As the wife of Garratt Morry, Susanna Brocas sold the Essex Lodge property to her stepbrother, William Bouldin II on 21 Dec. 1691.lxxx Her husband Garrett Morry later made a will as Garratt Murrey on 29 January 1699/1700, in which he mentioned his “wife,” sister Bettey Jones and William Veazey as executors, and son William.lxxxi It is uncertain whether Bettey Jones was the same as the Elizabeth Jones, widow of Edward Jones or Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Edward Jones.
As a planter, William Bouldin II may not have been educated like his mother Mary Thwaite, but he was shrewd about land investments. As William Bouldinge, he obtained a patent in 1721 for 100 acres called ffateague or Fateague on a neck of land between the north side of Bohemia Back Creek and south side of Elk River. It was located to the southward of Boulding’s plantation, and adjacent to Welch Point.lxxxii
13
In a deed dated 23 April 1715, William Bolden and wife Thomasin (with her consent) sold Thomas Keare a parcel called William’s Choice containing 100 acres in Cecil County along
the creeks of Bohemia River.lxxxiii Thomas Keare and wife Mary in their deed of 28 April 1715 sold William Bolden one half of his portion of a tract containing 300 acres, which had been given to Keare and his brother James from their father Thomas Keare, deceased.lxxxiv Lawrence Rawson and wife Susanna sold 150 acres of land called Bristoll to William Boulding on 4 December 1717.lxxxv James Keare, bricklayer, also decided to sell his inheritance. On 21 April 1724, he sold his tract called Uppermost on Bohemia back creek to William “Bowldin.”lxxxvi William Boulding or Bolden petitioned that he was seized in fee simple of a part of a tract originally granted to someone who later sold it to Keare, who called it Chancellors Choice. Since there was a surplus of 100 acres of land, William Boulden requested a special warrant to have the property resurveyed and have his rightful portion, Boulden’s Rest, properly accounted for.lxxxvii
In 1727, William Bouldin made three depositions in court about past owners of certain tracts, which he remembered from his youthful days. Now aged about sixty-two on 6 July 1727, William Boulding recalled clearing a road from Ferry Point als Hacks Point towards the White Marsh, and a notched white oak tree.lxxxviii His second deposition on the same day concerned the “Roan Mair Valley” and their inhabitants.lxxxix During that same year, he again testified at age sixty-two that he did not know a tract called Wormust.xcAged about sixty [sic], he again testified in court on 6 September 1727 that he remembered well the Chesnut stump under dispute, which had served as a boundary marker for the Glebe land near Saint Stephen’s Church.xci On 26 April 1731, at age sixty-six, he testified about the land boundaries of an inhabitant.xcii His age during his recollections about his mother and stepfather Edward Jones was given as sixty-eight on 29 June 1731.xciii On 15 June 1732, as William Boulding Senior, he gave two more testimonials. He was now aged about sixty-eight. He recalled his father-in-law Edward Jones’ tract called Salem and a notched tree, which served as one of boundaries for many years for a seat called Manchester, once John Veazey’s.xciv On average, most of his ages placed his birth between years 1664-1666.
His wife Thomasin Nash-Bouldin also testified in court. Too ill to meet at a designated spot on 2 May 1727 to show authorities the location of the boundaries mentioned in the suit, Thomasin was present on 3 July 1727. She declared that she did know any tract called Wormust as claimed by a plaintiff.xcv During the 6 July 1727 court session with her husband, she deposed that she was aged about fifty-five. This places her birth date as circa 1672. She remembered a tree with twelve notches some fifty years before, prior her father Richard Nash’s death about forty-eight years ago. This tree had divided her father’s land from Mr. Peter Hack’s. Her mother planted cucumbers and other vines around that very tree some forty-three years before.xcvi In another testimony, Thomasin recalled as a young child, she heard her father tell her mother that his land came to that place, the “roan Mair Valley.”xcvii
14
The surviving records of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church contain entries so poorly penned from a bad quill that several dates are nearly illegible. Many pages are missing altogether while mere fragments from other pages remain. Estelle Smith Keppler mentioned
that William Bouldin II’s daughter Mary was born in 1698. While the years are hard to
read, the earliest entries on that page after Mary’s name stood for the year 1689. Moreover, two wills make clear that she was born before 1698.
3. + William Thwaite/Bouldin II2 (William Bouldin I1) and Thomasin Nash were parents of the following known children:
Mary Bouldin, b 2 Jan. 1689;xcviii probably died during her minority since her father did not appear to make any deeds to her or her possible husband. Robert Crook’s will, dated 28 August 1693, left a bequest for Mary.xcix She was last mentioned when she was given a legacy in Samuel Wheeler’s will of 15 January 1694.c

Mary _____cxv and was still alive as of September 1749, at an unspecified location.cxvi He may have lived along the Delaware region where he had been a witnesscxvii before he again disappeared from the records. It is believed that he moved to another location yet unknown.
+Col. Thomas II Bouldin, b 15 Jan. 1706;cxviii made will 1 May 1777; proven in court 2 June 1783; d c. 1783, “Golden Hills,” near Drakes Branch, Charlotte Co., Va.cxix; m 29 Jan. 1733, Ann “Nancy” Clark, Saint Stephen’s.cxx She was the daughter of Thomas Clark, of New Castle, Delaware and “late of Philadelphia,” Pennsylvania, and Jane Wood (also called Jannetje and Jenneken) of New Castle, Delaware, New York, and Barbados.cxxi

Some kind of dispute developed over the Addition tract title, which William Bouldin and wife Thomasin had sold back in 1695. On 17 Oct. 1732, the court heard the history of the property, which once belonged to Thomasin Nash before her marriage, and the complaints of a Capt. William Elliott. After William Bouldin II and wife Thomasin again “sold” the Addition parcel to help defend and secure the title for Capt. Elliott, the court privately found Thomasin Nash-Bouldin willing to acknowledge the deed. This document was not recorded until May 1738 court to finalize the dispute between the parties involved in the case.cxxvi To the author’s best knowledge, October 1732 was the last documented appearance of Thomasin Nash-Bouldin.
William Bouldin II parceled out various lands as his legacy to his surviving children. On 3 February 1733, William Boulding II gave his son Thomas Boulding the plantation where he, William, now lives, and which formerly belonged to Edward Booker. It consisted of 250 acres and was called Bristol.cxxvii On 4 February, he gave his son Richard Boulding a tract, which once belonged to Rawson, being about fifty acres.cxxviii His son-in-law, Thomas Beetle [sic] received fifty acres along the Elk River.cxxix The next day, he gave his son William Bouldin Jr. (III) a piece of property consisting of 130 acres along Bohemia Back Creek, adjacent to Thomas Beetle and Thomas Boulding.cxxx He also gave his son Alexander Boulding the land he was already in possession of, being 150 acres adjacent to Thomas Boulding.cxxxi In court on 17 April 1734, William Bouldin acknowledged his transactions in court.cxxxii This proves that William Bouldin II was still alive at this date, and was around 70 years old. Since his wife Thomasin’s name or signature did not appear among these deeds, it is believed that she was no longer living.
Now getting on in years, and likely widowed, William Bouldin II appears to have made a conscious decision not to make a will, since no will, account or inventory has been located for him or for his son Alexander. The rest of the Bouldin family members had left behind such records. The possibility that William II might have moved away with son Alexander Bouldin to a new location in or after 1734 should be considered. It would explain the absence of such records for William II and son Alexander in subsequent Cecil County records. Only once did Alexander come back to Cecil County in 1738 before he disappeared again. It is probably no accident that William Bouldin II and son Alexander disappeared together from the Cecil County records in or after 1734
16
What became of William and Thomasin’s surviving children? Some of them stayed in the area while others eventually left the county. Since there has been so much confusion and merging of wrong individuals in this particular generation, their own children have been included in order to clear up the last few problems of the Bouldin saga. Again, It pays to examine every available resource.
5. +Richard Bouldin (William Bouldin II,2 William Bouldin I 1): As the oldest surviving child who reached maturity and married Mary Hews, he appeared in court on 8 April 1718 to make an oath about the account he made concerning his brother-in-law Gabriel Hews’estate.cxxxiii There appears to have been an epidemic, which killed a number of settlers in 1739/1740, and Richard may have been among them since he made his will on 28 October 1740 in Cecil County. He named children Richard, Thomas (m. cousin Augustina Bouldin), Mary (m. Richard Ford), Thomason, Margaret, and Rachel, and his brother Thomas Boulding. A son John had predeceased him.cxxxiv The younger children were to be taught “reading, writing and arithmetick” and have Richard Ford as their guardian. Richard Bouldin’s will was probated in court on 1 January 1740 (Old Style),cxxxv with his own son Richard named as executor. His inventory included a writing desk and violin.cxxxvi His property known as Richard’s Chance was surveyed and mapped in 1722–1723. The 335 acres stood on the north side of Back Creek, between Thomas’ Branch and Long/Muddy Creeks.cxxxvii
6. +Elizabeth Bouldin (William Bouldin II,2 William Bouldin I 1): She lived to advanced age like her father and husband. She was still living in Cecil County when her husband Thomas Biddle’s will was made on 6 June 1767. A codicil was added on 13 June 1767. He named wife Elizabeth, children William, Thomas, Rachel, Noble, and Rachel’s daughter, Mary Barneby. Son William displeased him in some way since he was cut off with the classic one-shilling, wearing apparel and no more. Biddle’s will was admitted to court on 8 Feb. 1773.cxxxviii Now aged seventy-seven, Elizabeth was still living on 4 February 1774 when she appeared in court concerning his accounts, cxxxix and made her own will which was proven in court on 18 August 1782. She named daughters Mary, Sarah, Rachel, sons Noble and William, Mary the wife of son Noble, and granddaughters Mary and Amelia.cxl
It turned out that Thomas Biddle did not name all of his children in his will. The “representatives” of Thomas Biddle’s estate in these 1774 accounts were his widow Elizabeth, Mary Ford, Sarah Veazey, Rebecca Armstrong, Thomas Biddle, Noble Biddle, and Mary Barnaby. Their daughter Rachel and son William were not mentioned in these accounts. cxli Mary Barnaby was the granddaughter mentioned in Thomas Biddle’s will along with his sons Thomas and Noble. Mary Ford, who had married James Ford,
17
eventually moved to South Carolina.cxlii Rebecca Armstrong first married her cousin William Bouldin IV, and then John Armstrong. She had issue by both, including a son Noble Bouldin, and Martha and John Armstrong.cxliii Noble Biddle, in turn, witnessed John and Rebecca Armstrong’s administration bond of William Bouldin IV’s estate, 23 May 1773,cxliv and Rebecca’s will dated 24 April 1777.cxlv Her will stipulated that a Thomas Biddle, likely her brother, to be the guardian of Martha and John Armstrong. Since Rebecca died before her mother Elizabeth Biddle, she was not mentioned in her mother’s will. Rebecca’s son Lewis Bouldin administered her estate on 22 June 1778, and a John Veazey was mentioned along with Noble Beedle, security.cxlvi As Nobel Biddel, he was named as Rebecca’s next of kin, in her inventory.cxlvii He mentioned his son Bouldin Biddle, and daughter Elizabeth, wife of Noble Veazey in his own will in 1796. His witnesses were J. Barneby, John Bouldin and Adam Armstrong.cxlviii
7. +William Bouldin III, twin (William Bouldin II,2 William Bouldin I 1): He married while very young, to Martha Price, believed to be the one of that name, recorded as born 6 June 1705 at Saint Stephen’s, and daughter of Thomas and Mary Price..cxlix According to an account presented in court 25 February 1734, William paid off his debt of eighteen shillings and seven and a half pence.cl He did not leave a will, but he died sometime before 9 April 1740 when his inventory was presented to the Cecil County court by his appraisers.cli When his widow Martha Boulding appeared in court on 26 July 1741, she made oath that the inventory was just to the best of her knowledge.clii Martha later married widower Richard Ellwood, and with her new husband, presented an account of William Boulding’s estate on 6 August 1744, in which her four Bouldin children were named: Richard, William (IV), Elizabeth and Mary.cliii Martha Price-Bouldin-Ellwood did not live long. Richard Ellwood made a will dated 20 Dec. 1750, in which he named his older children Richard, Mary and Sarah Ellwood, and then his youngest child, Martha Ellwood. His other son John was executor. No wife was mentioned.cliv
Given the extensive confusion in the Bouldin lineage in many publications about this William Bouldin III, his children are discussed further to clarify and disentangle various family relationships. His son Richard made his own will on 25 March 1748, as a young adult and chose uncle William Price and brother-in-law James Foster as his executors. His plantation on Back Creek was to go to his sister Elizabeth and the other plantation on Elk River to his brother William. Since his sister Mary was not mentioned in his 1748 will or inventory or accounts, she may have already died or married. The rest of his possessions were to go to “my honored and well beloved Mother’s youngest daughter Martha.” Since this particular Martha was deliberately not described as his sister, this indicated that his mother had remarried and had a new daughter Martha. His uncle James Boulding was among the witnesses. It would not be until 10 May 1748 that his will was probated, clv and his account submitted in court by his uncle William Price on 9 June 1749.clvi Like his brother Richard, William Bouldin III had his land patented. Known as Boulding’s Rest, the 330 acres, it began at St. Thomas’ Creek towards Back Creek.clvii
18
William Bouldin III’s son, William Bouldin IV, also married very young and lived until about 1764 when his young widow Rebecca came to court on 16 June 1764 to make oath about his inventory, taken on 25 March 1764. His nearest kin were named as James and Thomas Boulding.clviii In his account presented in September 1766 court, his young children were named Richard, Lewis, Mary, William, and Noble. A Noble Beedle was among the sureties.clix Rebecca was his cousin and daughter of Elizabeth Boulding and Thomas Biddle not only because of her name being listed in Thomas Biddle’s 1774 account, but also in view of the name, Noble, and the presence of a John Biddle in the 1766 account. A John Biddle Jr. was one of her securities. Also recall that Noble Biddle served as a witness to her 1774 will and present on other occasions.
8. Alexander Bouldin, twin (William Bouldin II,2 William Bouldin I 1): Named in an account of John Nelson presented in court on 11 July 1735, he paid off his debt to Nelson’s executor in the amount of £16, 3s and half pence. He and his wife Mary sold his parcel to brother-in-law Thomas Beetle [sic] on 15 February 1737. This parcel was part of a tract called Uppermost, and consisted of the remaining 50 acres. The other 50 acres of Uppermost had been sold to Thomas Price Jr. Signed with his monogram, AB, the document listed a John Copson and Thomas Price as witnesses.clx The maiden name of his wife Mary is yet to be determined. His 33–acre parcel, Beetle’s Intent, was also surveyed and platted by warrant in 1737–1738. It was located on the east side of Elk River in the neck between the said river and Back Creek, not far from the property called Uppermost.clxi In 1738, he patented 33 acres called Beetle’s Intent.clxii Although Alexander later left the county, he could not have lived all that far away, given the primitive mode of travel, and because he was able to return to Cecil County in 1741 as one of the brothers named in Richard Bouldin’s inventory.
Until now, Alexander’s
subsequent whereabouts remained a mystery for decades, thanks to his
name being omitted from the index in a publication concerning
depositions. Through a thorough examination of other depositions by
every other near relative, including his cousin Richard Nash, and
brother James Boulding, Alexander Boulding’s name suddenly came to
light. According to his cousin Richard Nash’s testimony on 4
February 1750, he was aged about fifty-five and living at New Castle,
Delaware. Alexander Boulding had come to his house the previous
September. Although summoned to testify about a disputed tract
called Swaile in Cecil County, he somehow “escaped” from
his duty, stating that he would rather “go to prison than do it
because it would hurt his Relations very Much.” Alexander went on
to describe the very tree in question in the suit, stating that his
father had put his very hand on that tree and said it was the
“Chancellors bounded tree.”clxiii
James Boulding, aged approximately thirty-seven, stated that he heard
Alexander Boulding say he was fishing that
day and that his father had told him “it was well if that tree that had Notches on it did not
hurt their Land.” He then later claimed that he knew nothing of the matter.clxiv Thomas
19
Price Sr., aged seventy-six, recalled that he was a small boy of six or seven when he last saw the tree in question, and could not recall more about the area by Thomas Beadles’ Landing other than it was once known as Rowland Williams Back Landing. He also heard that Alexander Boulding had been fishing with his brother at the time and when he came ashore, he asked his father (who was standing by the tree) what the notches were for. His father replied that it was a bounded tree.clxv
It appears that some kind of trouble arose over some tract, which had the potential to impact the Bouldin family land holdings. Alexander Boulding lived not far from his cousin Richard Nash in New Castle County, Delaware, since he served as a witness to a 1748 deed of Anthony Rawlings of Kent Co., Delaware. He does not appear again in the land records.clxvi No will has been listed for him in Delaware. Perhaps future research in the deed and court records would yield more helpful information.
Alexander Bouldin is not to be confused with an Alexander Jehu Bouldin (1798-1855), a lifelong native of Baltimore and surveyor. Owner of a Bouldin farm in Baltimore during the War of 1812, this Alexander was the son of a Jehu Bouldin (1760-1830), another Baltimore native. His parentage is unknown.clxvii While these names are suggestive, no evidence at this time has come to light showing their connection to Alexander Bouldin.
9. +Col. Thomas Bouldin [III?](William Bouldin II,2 William Bouldin I 1): The account of John Nelson in court session dated 25 February 1734 revealed that Thomas paid off his debt of one shilling.clxviii On 21 Feb.1737 in Cecil County, Thomas acknowledged that he had never received any goods, chattels, rights or credits from his mother-in-law Jane (Wood) Clark’s estate in Barbados.clxix Thomas Bouldin sold one tract called Bristol to William Dames on 29 May 1744,clxx and another parcel called Bouldings Rest to Thomas Beetle [sic] on 11 October 1744. clxxi That same day, he and Thomas Beetle and their respective wives Ann and Elizabeth sold land to Dorothy Patton 107 acres.clxxiiAfter he settled his family at their new homestead called Golden Hills near Drakes Branch in Charlotte County, Virginia, he served the Revolutionary War cause with distinction. Col. Thomas and wife Ann “Nancy” Clark were parents of James E., Ephraim, Francinia, Thomas Jr., Joseph, Wood, Richard, William B., Thomasin, Mary, and Jenneke.clxxiii
11. +James Bouldin (William Bouldin II,2
William Bouldin I 1): He chose to remain in
Cecil County for years, and was named in the will of his
father-in-law Nathan Phillips’ will of 24 May 1748.clxxiv
He ultimately moved to Pencader Hundred at New Castle, Delaware where
he died on 17 Feb. 1784 after making a will dated 4 January 1783. The
witnesses were James Foster, Andrew Biddle, and Robert Armstrong. He
and his wife Elizabeth raised a number of children named James,
Thomas, Nathan, Elisha, Jesse, Augustina, Rachel, and Elijah.clxxv
There was also a son-in-law Richard Bouldin who was mentioned in
Elizabeth Bouldin’s own will in 1785.clxxvi
20
It is doubtful that James Bouldin knew that he had moved back to a township and state
where his maternal great-grandfather once lived prior to 1658. That is another story, which will be included in an article about the ancestry of Thomasin Nash. Instead, descendants should be grateful that Thomas Bouldin I, William Bouldin I, and William Bouldin II, as the only living male in each generation, managed to produce the next surviving generation against such great odds. It is hoped that descendants of various Bouldins can now trace their lines back to the children of this fourth generation and complete their family trees.
Those who are descendants of Col. Thomas Bouldin of Maryland and Virginia may find the following information of interest. After his move to Virginia from Maryland, Col. Thomas Bouldin became one of the most prominent citizens of Charlotte County, Virginia. We know that Col. Thomas Bouldin in Virginia was the same man as the Thomas Bouldin, born to William Bouldin II and Thomasin Nash, not only because of the names given to his children, but also because one of his sons, Richard Bouldin, was born on a ship as they sailed down the Chesapeake Bay towards Virginia. Richard Bouldin was often heard to say “By G_d! I was not born in any country-I was born on the Chesapeake Bay.”clxxvii
Besides being a planter, merchant, justice of the peace and magistrate, Col. Thomas Bouldin was a sheriff. He served both in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. His sons Thomas, Joseph, Wood and Richard Bouldin also served in the Revolutionary cause.clxxviii
Col. Thomas Bouldin’s grandsons, Thomas Tyler Bouldin and James Wood Bouldin, both served as members of the House of Representatives, while his other grandson, Louis C. Bouldin, served as a member of the Virginia Senate. Still another grandson, Wood Bouldin, was a member of the Convention of 1901–1902 while another great-grandson, Powhatan Bouldin, was a respected journalist.clxxix
Thus concludes the Bouldin saga concerning the corrected first four generations and disentanglement of various identities of the fifth generation. Hopefully, DNA testing in the future will provide the long-sought proof connecting Thomas Bouldin I of England and Virginia and the William Bouldin I of Gloucester County, Virginia and Baltimore County, Maryland.

Notes for THOMAS BOULDIN:
[Bouldin,JohnW..FTW]
Thomas Bouldin and his young family undertook a long and arduous journey from Maryland to Virginia to occupy the land he received in a grant from King George II of 970 acres. He built the 2nd framed house ever constructed in Virginia and expanded his landholdings until he had reached a position of wealth and prominence in the territory. He was appointed the first sheriff of Lunenburg County, served several terms, ascended to the Bench of the County Court and served as Justice from 1749 to 1759. He played an active role in the French and Indian War between 1753 and 1768. In 1773 he was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the militia of Charlotte County. His son Wood was a Major in the Revolution, and Thomas, an Ensign. Two of Wood's sons were elected to Congress and Wood's wife, Joanna Tyler, was the aunt of President John Tyler. His great-grandson, Powhatan Bouldin was the distinguished author of "The Old Trunk", which chronicles the lives of Colonel Bouldin, his family, friends and associates in colonial times in and about Charlotte County. He is buried there at "Golden Hills" near the old homeplace, along with numerous children and descendents.

Notes for THOMAS BOULDIN:
[Bouldin,JohnW..FTW]
Thomas Bouldin served as an Ensign in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War. In 1778 he was granted a license to operate an "Ordinary" or roadhouse where travelers could obtain food, drink and lodging. In 1789, he sold this business to his brother-in-law, Edward Moseley, Jr. He and his family then moved to Henry County, Virginia, where he began a partnership with Peter Perkins operating "Bouldin and Perkins Iron Works". In 1804 he purchased the interest of Peter Perkins and renamed it "Thomas Bouldin and Sons Iron Works." Thomas had acquired approximately 1500 acres of land between Smith River and Horsepasture, along Grassy Creek, and operated tobacco farms. His wife Martha was the oldest daughter of Captain Edward Moseley and his wife Amey Green, and a third cousin of President Thomas Jefferson. Her mother, Amey Green, was the daughter of William Green and Amey Clay, the great-aunt of Henry Clay, the noted American statesman from Ashland Kentucky, who served as Secretary of State under President John Quincy Adams (1825-1829). Thomas is buried near Grassy Creek in the Bouldin Family Cemetery. Regretfully, all that remains there is his marker and that of his son.

Notes for CAPT GREEN BOULDIN:
[Bouldin,JohnW..FTW]
Green Bouldin was a wealthy plantation owner with many slaves and large land holdings near what is now Decatur, Alabama. His wife, Mary Graves, was the daughter of William and Mary Graves of Henry County, Virginia. The progenitor of the Graves family in America was Captain Thomas Graves, who served as a Representative of the First Assembly in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Green first farmed land in Henry County, Virginia, given to him by his father. The tract consisted of 310 acres on Grassy Creek. Later his father conveyed another 134 acres along the waters of Grassy Creek to him. It should be noted that the Bouldin family cemetery is on that site and contains the markers of Thomas Bouldin and his son, Thomas Junior. He and his family left for Alabama about 1818 and began their plantation immediately. After his first wife, Mary, died he married again, to Elizabeth Jiggets Driver, a widow with six children. She died in 1829 and he in 1830. Having died intestate, his estate was sold and all proceeds divided among his children, as ordered by the Probate Court. He is buried in the Bouldin Family Cemetery on Old Moulton Road, behind the school now situated there.

Notes for COL W GRAVES BOULDIN:
[Bouldin,JohnW..FTW]
William Graves Bouldin migrated to Alabama with his family as the Cherokee territory opened for expansion. He was a surveyor, lawyer, magistrate and judge. He was an organizer of the Democratic Party in Alabama. He was commissioned a Captain in the 2nd regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the Alabama Militia during the war of 1812. He rose to the rank of Colonel and was presented a sword by the State of Alabama for patriotic services rendered in that war. During the war he became acquainted with Captain Eli Hammond, a very close friend and companion of General Andrew Jackson. When Jackson ascended to the Presidency, Hammond used his influence with him to obtain for his future son-in-law a commission as U. S. Surveyor of the Florida lands. He and his wife, Elizabeth Purnell Hammond, were frequent guests of the Jackson family, she having been born in Davidson County, Tennessee, and a close friend of Rachel Jackson's niece. Selling the farm in Alabama, they left for Texas in 1850 and began farming operations there with slaves brought along for that purpose. He established the "Bouldin-Routt Cemetery" near his homesite at the time of his wife's death in 1855. He followed her in death in 1857, and is buried beside her.
